Friends are a shortlist of avatars you want to keep an eye on. Adding someone gives you their current standing at a glance without going through the leaderboards, and tells you when they accept.

It is a light feature and worth saying so plainly: befriending nobody costs you nothing, since everything on an avatar profile is [public anyway](https://www.entropiacentral.com/documentation/directory/avatar-and-team-profiles#what-is-public-and-why).

Friends live on the **Friends** tab of **Dashboard, Social**, next to [societies](https://www.entropiacentral.com/documentation/social/societies).

## Adding a friend

Two ways in, both by avatar name.

**From the Social screen.** Use Add Friend and start typing. The search suggests avatars after two characters, showing each one's globals and PvP kills so you can tell two similar names apart, and you pick from the list rather than typing the name exactly.

**From their profile.** Any avatar page has an Add Friend button when you are signed in.

Either way the request sits pending until they act on it. They get a notification; you can cancel while it waits.

Three things refuse a request, and the first is the one people meet:

**The avatar has not joined Entropia Central.** You can only befriend an avatar somebody has [claimed](https://www.entropiacentral.com/documentation/account/creating-an-account#what-happens-to-your-avatar-name). A tracked avatar with no account behind it has nobody to send the request to, and the site says as much.

**You already have ten requests waiting.** Ten pending outgoing requests is the cap. Cancel one to send another.

**A request is already pending, or you are already friends.** One relationship per pair.

If somebody declined you before, you are allowed to ask again. A declined request is cleared out when you re-request rather than blocking you permanently.

## Accepting, declining and removing

Incoming requests appear at the top of the Friends tab with a count on the tab itself, and accept and decline buttons on each. Accepting notifies the person who asked.

Removing a friend is on the same list, and it needs no agreement from either side. The same control cancels a request you sent that has not been answered yet.

## What the list shows

Each friend is listed with their profile picture, their current rank in each board they appear on, and an arrow showing how far they have moved since the last rebuild. Members of your own society are marked with a Society badge, and accepted friendships show the date they started.

The filter box at the top matches on name, which is what you want once the list is long.

Rankings on the list come from the daily rebuild rather than from live play, so they move once a day. See [when standings update](https://www.entropiacentral.com/documentation/globals/leaderboards#when-standings-update).

## What friendship does not do

Friendship is not a permission. It grants no access to anything private, because there is nothing private on an avatar profile to grant. It is also entirely separate from society membership: a society member is not automatically a friend, and a friend is not a member.
